Broward Arts Journalism Alliance Program - Innovative Seminar for Arts Writers and Journalists |
BROWARD COUNTY, FL – Broward Cultural Division announces the second workshop in its innovative Broward Arts Journalism Alliance Program. Expanding the Framework for Arts Coverage will continue the momentum that began in the October session - Arts Journalism in the Digital Age. On Saturday, January 31, at ArtServe, 1350 E. Sunrise Blvd. in Fort Lauderdale, starting at 9:00AM, the program will investigate further the specific area of arts journalism with a full day of media discussions with local and national experts and colleagues in the field. The arts journalism initiative includes a partnership with the Society of Professional Journalists Florida Pro Chapter. Writers and journalists from the entire South Florida region are welcome to attend. Don't miss it!
With funding from the National Endowment for the Arts, the series is designed to explore innovative methods in local arts coverage for both the citizen writer to the media professional. The aim is to achieve a greater volume of new content, with richer more informed dialogue about the arts community. In addition to two keynote talks, attendees will break out into different sessions by selecting two workshops in the morning (10AM to noon) and TWO in the afternoon (2 - 4PM) to work with the faculty members from S. I. Newhouse School of Public Communications.

9 – 10AM: Keynote Speaker, Marielle Barrow, Founder, Editor-in-Chief, Caribbean Intransit, The Arts Journal. As a social entrepreneur, Barrow has established Caribbean Arts Village Ltd. to create a nexus for Caribbean artists in the region. She recently produced Fostering Economic & Commercial Viability of the Caribbean Creative Economy at the Inter-American Development Bank in Washington, DC.
1 – 2PM: Keynote Speaker, Dan Pacheco, The Peter A. Horvitz Endowed Chair in Journalism Innovation, at the S. I. Newhouse School of Public Communication.

The Broward Cultural Division is collaborating with the Goldring Arts Journalism Program, the Janklow Arts Leadership Program and the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University to design and deliver a repertoire of arts journalism training programs for the areas' content providers, professional broadcasters, media journalists, and other citizen writers who post arts-related story content.
The initiative will include expansion of the Broward Cultural Division's online magazine Cultural Quarterly and the development of new content for its ArtsCalendar.com website. The series will continue on February 21, 2015 at ArtServe.

Art Walk Coming to Hallandale Beach
Artist's Chamber of Commerce in collaboration with Xavier's Cigar Lounge is please to announce the official launch of Hallandale Art Walk to be held January 10th and the second Saturday of every month thereafter.
Hallandale Art Walk was founded by creative genius Harris Safra the President of Creative Ad SpecialTeez along with the help of Jay Shapiro of Artists Chamber of Commerce. Harris is a cigar enthusiast who recently opened up an artisanal boutique cigar lounge at RK Plaza in Hallandale Beach. Part of the marketing plan for Xavier's Cigar Lounge (named after his grandson) was to host monthly events with free food, live music etc. After a couple very successful events with over 200 people in attendance Harris realized that the plaza itself is large enough to host an art walk and all of the businesses in the plaza will benefit as well as local artisans and the municipality of Hallandale Beach will also benefit via increased monthly tax base.
The January event will feature free food, live music, art booths on display and entertainment.

Funding Arts Broward Awards Close to a Quarter Million Dollars...
Twenty-five arts projects have been brought to life for the 2014 - 2015 season, with help through a grant award from Funding Arts Broward. That gives four new eligible FAB! grantees an opportunity through this resourceful funding pool. The new arts organizations added to the FAB! portfolio are: Brazilian Voices; Chameleon Musicians; Gay Men's Chorus of South Florida and the Pablo Malco Foundation. Highlights of the most recent 25 awards will give South Florida one more opportunity to see Alvin Ailey - Back in Broward at Broward Center for the Performing Arts; another exposure of Puccini's Madame Butterfly though Florida Grand Opera; and Seraphic Fire's Broward Spring Season. This, just to name a few attractions that Broward residents and visitors can count on thanks to smart arts supporters who collaborate, give and enhance our community. Thank you FAB! "This grant award has been fundamental in helping the Coral Springs community see an expanded arts and culture portfolio within its very diverse suburban community," says grantee, Executive Director, Coral Springs Museum of Art, Bryan Knicely.
In May, the Annual Meeting and Grant Awards Presentation was held at the Tower Club in Fort Lauderdale; interested guests were invited to attend to explore FAB! memberships. In a very festive atmosphere, each of the FAB! grantees received their grant award and recognition from FAB! funding partners. "This luncheon is the highlight of the year for FAB! members," says Drazia Rubenstein, FAB! President. "It is a time to enjoy what FAB! is all about - celebrating awarding grants with a wonderful collection of generous friends that care about our community, and the importance of the arts in making it an even more beautiful place to live."
FAB! offers a grants program created through a sustainable funding pool supported by annual contributions by members - individual ($1000) and corporate ($3500). Every cent of the membership fee is distributed to the arts through grants. Since 2003 FAB! has awarded more than $2.1 million to eligible arts organizations. Members feel that money geared towards this particular type of community development has a direct economic impact, as well as an enhancement in personal quality of life, community value and arts education. It's an endeavor rich with reward. "Under the expert direction of grants chair, Diane Hardy, and vice chair, Susan Lochrie, one-third of our members were involved in the grant review process," says Rubenstein. "We are thrilled that we have new grantees this year and that the dollars we are awarding have increased from last year." FAB! members are an integral part of the grant process. They volunteer to review grant applications, conduct site visits and evaluate and recommend funding for specific projects. Grantees are then selected by a vote of the FAB! members.

FAB! grants are available to eligible arts organizations serving Broward County if the mission of the applicant organization is primarily artistic. "It's a very simple application process, that helps the grantee to move forward towards the goal, which in our case is to keep the arts alive in Coral Springs," noted Knicely.
Funding Arts Broward, FAB! is a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving and cultivating the arts in Broward County. Now in its 11th year, the organization was created in response to the need for private financial support to expand on development of arts and culture in Broward County.
